Introduction

It takes a long time for science cultures to emerge, especially in nations like the Philippines. There is a need to promote science culture given how limited it presently in the Philippines. Rethinking the incentive structure, redesigning science and math courses, and instilling scientific-related qualities in children are some of the methods recommended to make science more appealing to the general population.

Students' worldly curiosity is fostered and its capacity for scientific knowledge is expanded through science education. Students will understand the nature of science through the inquiry process and acquire scientific knowledge and process skills to aid in their assessment of the outcomes of scientific and technological advancement.

When considering the science education of the Philippines, there are some severe problems that must need to address. One of the main problems that encounter in the Philippines is the quality of education that receives by the students. The quality of science education is one of the reasons why students, despite of their age, are not interested in science. When it comes to the global level of science education, it is fact that the science education in the Philippines is not good (PISA, 2018) compared to those other country such as Germany, Japan and China which excel in the field of science and other subjects.

Our country's science education cannot be viewed as strength because based on 2014 statistics; the passing rate for the national achievement test (NAT) for grade six pupils is only 69.21%. The passing rate for high school seems far worse, with a passing rate of only 46.38% from 2010 statistics. Moreover, the Philippines consistently performs abysmally in international surveys. (National Achievement Test, 2014)

The Philippines placed last among participating nations in the most recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 results, which included Science as one of the topics assessed. The Department of Education may now suggest additional initiatives to address the low academic performance and improve the standard of education in the Philippines especially in science due to the outcomes of the nation's first PISA participation.

It is necessary to conduct this kind of study to because it provides the opportunity for all the visitors to actively explore the science and it play an important role in promoting science learning and strengthen and enrich the quality of school science for all learners. Science Museum promote lifelong engagement and have a vital role to play providing life-long learning experience, inspiring the next generation and enhancing scientific literacy which can trigger and sustain an interest in science. The importance of the science museum is to educate community about science and provides extraordinary educational experience for children to be more interactive.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to provide visitors with the opportunity to actively explore science and recognize its important role in promoting science learning. It also aims to strengthen and enrich the quality of science education for learners. A Science Museum promotes lifelong engagement with science by providing meaningful learning experiences, inspiring future generations, and enhancing scientific literacy. Through its interactive exhibits and educational programs, it can spark and sustain public interest in science.

This proposed study seeks to demonstrate the relevance and importance of establishing a Science Museum. It aims to help people understand the significance of science in everyday life and its contribution to national development. Furthermore, the study will support the advancement of science education in the Philippines by addressing challenges in science learning and encouraging greater public appreciation of scientific knowledge. A Science Museum provides extraordinary educational experiences for both children and adults by offering interactive and engaging learning opportunities that foster curiosity and critical thinking.

Science museums play a significant role in shaping visitors' perspectives on science and serve as valuable supplementary resources for science education. Their exhibits present natural phenomena, technological innovations, and scientific concepts in ways that encourage visitors to interact, ask questions, and deepen their understanding. Visitors can learn scientific principles by participating in hands-on activities, exploring interactive games, watching presentations, reading exhibit descriptions, and engaging with objects designed for tactile learning. Ultimately, the museum aims to connect people through science and help them understand its essential role in everyday life through its exhibits and galleries.

Statement of the Problem

Main Problem

When considering the science education of the Philippines, there are some severe problems that must need to address. One of the main problems that encounter in the Philippines is the quality of education that receives by the students. The quality of science education is one of the reasons why students, despite of their age, are not interested in science.

According to the most recent PISA 2018 results, where Science was one of the disciplines assessed, the Philippines came in last place among the participating nations. The Department of Education may now suggest additional initiatives to address the low academic performance and improve the standard of education in the Philippines due to the outcomes of the nation's first PISA participation.

Sub Problem

Lack of trained science teachers, poor textbooks, inadequate teaching tools and equipment, and a lack of administrative support.

The Philippines has lack of supporting museum that is related to science in which can help to trigger their interest of community in this field.

Most of the science museum in the Philippines has been closed for the reason that there is nothing new to visit it and not attractive to the community.

Lack of Museum about science.

Architectural Thesis Goals/Objectives/Strategies

Thesis Goals

The thesis goal is to propose a modern science museum and planetarium for community that promote lifelong engagement and have a vital role to play providing life-long learning experience, inspiring the next generation and enhancing scientific literacy which can trigger and sustain an interest in science.

Objectives

This study shall aim the following:

The study shall be built in a part of urbanizing area

The study shall aim to provide an educational resource for schools through museum

The study shall aim to develop a scientific literacy of the community especially for both children and adult

The study shall aim to learn kids about science in a way of fun and exciting atmosphere

The study shall aim to trigger interest, awareness, knowledge and understanding of science

The study shall aim to learn science through a lot of interactive activities, stations for children to play and field trips.

The study shall aim to promote science learning and enrich quality if school science for all learners through museum

Scope and Limitations

The scope of the study focuses on how architecture will play a significant role in the museum and how this project can help to the education of community especially in science education. The study will provide the education about science to help the community especially the students.

The study will use quantitative data approaches for the broad purposes and depth of understanding. It will utilize survey, questionnaires, interviews, and demographic profile that will gather response from the community especially to the students.

The study delimitation is to design a modern science museum and planetarium that will help students to improve and trigger the interest in science. The study is limited to the people who want to learn and curios about science. Also, for the community who are very much interested in science. Since science is too much broad, the context of the museum is limited to the branch, which is the Natural Science. Natural Science is one of the branches of science that concerned and deals with physical world. It can divide into two main branches: life science and physical science. Life science is the alternative known as biology while the physical science is subdivided into branches: Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science and Astronomy.

The site will be consulted and approved by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for cutting the trees and sustain some of the trees for a good purpose to the environment, building and users.
