This study was conducted from September 2022 to June 2023 in Trece Martires City, Cavite Province, for the Proposal of a mixed-used complex focused on Public Market with Soil-based Vertical Farm and Hydroponics farm using Nutrient Film Technique and Kratky Method. The general objectives of the study were to bring closer Agriculture to the People utilizing Marketplace and open spaces and gain awareness from the Agricultural Sector, especially regarding the condition of the farmers in the country and to help Youth and Agricultural Sector relationship broader concerning strengthening and to encourage people when it comes to the Agricultural workforce.
The vision of this proposal was to be a foundation to perceive agriculture as a remunerative profession and as an economic opportunity for the next generation to design an innovative, modern, and efficient building that will primarily benefit consumers and market vendors by providing them with a good state in their community environments and by implementing some procedures and advantages in higher quality food and to help in administering the promotion of agricultural development growth.
In order to address those issues and problems, the researchers aimed to promote the local agricultural industry through the project's institutional and social features, such as the agricultural marketplace, which benefits the farmers, consumers, and local agricultural products, as well as the national and local governments.
Also, the researchers to the idea of making an agricultural vertical farm along with a marketplace that helps the farmers to produce additional revenue and income in agriculture with the resiliency of their crops from natural disasters and calamities and reduce their cost in logistics and input cost. It will also help the consumers by providing additional comfort, communication and interaction when they go visit the market and at the same time it would help the country by expanding the export market and products beyond the immediate neighborhood countries.
The main facilities covered in this study were: Dry Market, Wet Market, Soil based and Hydroponics Vertical Farm, Bagsakan Center, Market Administration Building, Agricultural Training Center, Agricultural Park, Agricultural Convention Center, and Food Irradiation Facility following the vision of Republic Act No. 11321 or “Sakip Saka Act” that is complemented together with KADIWA ni Ani at Kita program which provides for direct purchase of agricultural and fishery products by local government agencies. The project proposal is also under the priorities from the National Expenditure Program of 2023 by the Marcos administration.
The procedures and methods used to create the public market with soil based and hydroponic vertical farms are listed in Figure 1. The input section includes the knowledge and data needed to build the project plan, such as information of regional development plan, and comprehensive land use plan, ideas of the precise visuals to be used to be used for every plans and render perspectives of the project and designing and planning the public market with vertical farm project in architectural software such as Autocad, Lumion, Sketchup, Enscape, Adobe photoshop, and Adobe Indesign. The study step included regional and profile analysis, site selection, site criteria, site analysis, project concept, architectural programming, design considerations, floor plans, elevation plans, section plans, and exterior and interior perspectives.
The architectural style guide is convivial architecture since the proposed project is a commercial structure that corresponds to public spaces. The convivial approach makes the project environment more friendly, lively, and enjoyable in relation to ambiance and purposes.
Landscape metamorphosis is used for vertical farms to bring innovative design for green landscapes by using vertical ideas and the agrisilviculture system concept for planting open areas that provide a natural canopy and crop plantation at the same time.
Regional and sectoral profile analysis is the data of getting the highest percentage of weaknesses and threats within a region under economic, social, institutional and infrastructure sectors. Regional development plan is the data of prioritized sectors within the region. Site selection, site criteria, site analysis, micro site analysis, and macro site analysis is an architectural method to determine which site within selected areas are good for the project proposal and it is guided by the municipality of Trece Martires City, locality of Department of Agriculture and the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) of the area. Conceptualization of the project is sketching plans of the site by using architectural programming and design guidelines from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and National Building Code of the Philippines (NBCP).
Laws and ordinances, character, orientation, circulation, zoning, accessibility, light and ventilation, landscaping, spatiality, atmosphere, and technology were the aspects that were taken into account in this project.
“KADIWA: Bridging the gap between Agritecture and Community through Vertical Peri-Urban Marketplace” is a proposed mixed-used development focusing on providing solutions in promoting and supporting Agriculture by means of architecture in a Vertical Peri-Urban marketplace amidst aging farmers and decreasing number of farmers yearly.
After the study was completed, the researchers concluded that the development was deemed feasible in Brgy. San Agustin, Trece Martires City, Province of Cavite. This conclusion was formed with the information gathered throughout the entirety of the process in making the proposal. Data were gathered from various reliable resources such as the books related to the study, from libraries, e-libraries, articles, undergraduate theses, verified website and web searches, interviews, video presentations, news, ocular visitations, and other documents given by the government agencies. During the architectural programming and planning process, these data were analyzed and used in application to the objectives, scope and delimitation, site and design criteria, design and form concepts, philosophy, considerations, and design strategies. Information gathered was utilized to develop space programming as well. The majority of the data came from the government agencies: DOH, DOST-PNRI, IAEA, DILG and was provided by experts who had contributed to the development of the country’s industry.
The final outputs that were created following the research provide proof that the plan is feasible. These included the architectural programming, architectural plans and development plans, and also the project walkthrough.
