Project Overview
The Aumvision Education Complex is an architectural capstone project that proposes a specialized education and therapy center for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Quezon City. Rooted in the principles of behavioral architecture, the study emphasizes how spatial design can respond to the unique sensory, behavioral, and social needs of persons with ASD.
In the Philippine context, where inclusive education often obliges children with autism to adapt to mainstream systems—frequently leading to adverse developmental outcomes—there is a pressing need for facilities tailored to their requirements. The project addresses the gap by creating a paradigm of inclusivity through adaptive learning spaces, therapeutic facilities, and community support areas. The design integrates sensory-responsive environments, quiet zones, and flexible learning arrangements, supported by evidence-based approaches and post-pandemic considerations.
The project aims to (1) provide safe, adaptive, and therapeutic spaces that nurture growth and well-being, (2) translate behavioral insights into architectural strategies that enhance inclusivity, and (3) contribute to professional knowledge by establishing a framework for ASD-sensitive design in the Philippines. Ultimately, the Aumvision Education Complex envisions becoming a landmark institution that empowers individuals with autism and promotes broader societal awareness of inclusivity in architecture.
Project Goal and Objectives
The project seeks to redefine inclusivity by establishing a paradigm for ASD-sensitive architectural design. Its objectives are:
- To provide safe, adaptive, and therapeutic spaces that enhance learning and well-being.
- To translate behavioral insights into architectural strategies that foster inclusivity, accessibility, and sensory comfort.
- To establish facilities that support education, therapy, physical activity, and parental awareness programs.
- To design a meaningful and timely project by creating spaces that will nurture and focus on the betterment of children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder through the study of behavioral architecture.
Design Considerations
• Spatial Provisions: Incorporation of sensory rooms, designated quiet areas, and integration of assistive technologies.
• Material and Aesthetic Choices: Utilization of muted colors, non-glare finishes, and flexible classroom layouts with color-coded wayfinding.
• Programmatic Integration: Allocation of therapy facilities, seminar and training rooms, as well as outdoor recreational spaces to support holistic development.
Significance of the Study
The Aumvision Education Complex aspires to become a landmark facility that not only caters to children and adolescents with ASD but also raises awareness, combats stigma, and promotes inclusivity in architectural practice. It aligns with Quezon City’s urban development goals and responds to the growing demand for specialized educational and therapeutic learning environments in the Philippines.
