The Proposed Pines Public Market envisions the transformation of Baguio City’s aging public market into a vibrant, modern, and culturally rooted civic space. For years, the old market has operated in a congested and disorganized state, lacking both comfort and functionality. This proposal aims to revitalize the area by creating a well-organized, inclusive, and regenerative environment where both locals and tourists can gather, shop, and experience the unique culture of Baguio.
Rooted in the design philosophy, “Designing beyond Building, Designing beyond
Green,” the market goes beyond physical construction and basic sustainability. It
embodies a deeper purpose—to regenerate urban space, celebrate cultural heritage,
and educate the community.
“Designing beyond Building” means creating spaces that are not just functional
structures, but living systems that respond to the needs of people, place, and identity.
“Designing beyond Green” moves past traditional eco-friendly measures toward a
holistic, regenerative approach that supports environmental health, local food
systems, and sustainable living practices.
Drawing inspiration from the pine cone—a symbol of regeneration and
protection—and the form of the Kalinga House, the design reflects Baguio’s identity
as the “City of Pines.” These elements are translated into architectural language that
honors tradition while embracing innovation.
The new market will not only provide a complete shopping experience but also serve as
a hub for local entrepreneurship, healthy living, and community education,
particularly through hydroponic farming systems and nutrition awareness
programs. It aims to strengthen cultural pride, boost the local economy, and create a
resilient public space that nurtures both people and the environment.
