The objective of the study was to locate an appropriate site and design a solution for a cemetery in Manila City. The researchers conducted case studies, interviews and online surveys to collect the necessary data Results from the online survey were used to design and create the kind of services the project will offer. Based on the study of various local and foreign case studies, different design solutions such as converting the traditional horizontal space into a vertical space and provision of spaces that is needed by the users were applied to the project. The case studies were helpful to pinpoint the important spaces needed in a vertical cemetery. From the results of the face-to-face and online interviews to gather information from specific persons relevant to the study. The interviews helped the researchers to further understand specific information about cemeteries, burial methods, health protocols and other vital data needed in the project. The proposed facility is an urban vertical cemetery and columbarium. Among its features are a sanctuary, that means to be safe, protected, and finding peace, and Gothic Revival style of architecture which is widely used in religious structures. Among the innovations incorporated are the use of WebiWake, electrochemic glass, digital signages, and LENUS anti-virus guards. The results indicate that the proposed project will benefit to the citizens of Manila City, the researched financial amounts and design is attainable, and will serve as an affordable and dependable facility to accommodate the final resting place of a loved one.

Cemeteries are sacred resting places and sanctuaries for the beloved who passed away. It is a land of remembrance, where families reminisce moments with their departed loved ones. However, cemeteries are one of the least priorities when it comes to design and planning development. Sometimes they are even neglected and the area gets crowded every single day. In the Philippines, Manila City is classified as a highly urbanized and is the most populated city. However, there is land insufficiency because of the drastic urbanization. Urban communities focus on providing space for the living, but on the other hand, it ignores the dead. A cemetery is a vital element in society because it serves as humanity's final destination. It should be given attention as people want their resting haven to be the same as their safe place when they were still alive.

Cemeteries in Manila are located in the northernmost and southernmost districts of the city, away from the city’s business and trade center. One of the prominent cemeteries in the city is the Manila North Cemetery. It is owned by the City of Manila and was established in 1904; there are 54 hectares of land with a million burials. Another notable cemetery is the Manila South cemetery, located in Makati, which was established in 1925.It covers 25 hectares of land and accommodates 750,000 burials. Since there is no land for expansion, the overpopulation of the burials has resulted in congestion.

On the other hand, the rapid urbanization of Manila has increased the population growth and mortality rate. The city is accountable for about 14% of the population of the National Capital Region in 2020, and it has also recorded the second-highest registered deaths of about 13.5% in the first quarter of 2020. The city’s population and the death rates are also increasing yearly, thus consuming more land for settlement. With all of that said, land scarcity and overcrowding have become major problems for the city cemeteries’ horizontal development to accommodate the populous settlers.

The general objective of this study was to design an urban vertical cemetery and columbarium in Manila City that would provide more burial spaces and preferences. First, this study aimed to locate a site that could be converted as a cemetery in Manila City. Next was to integrate a design solution for an appropriate cemetery in Manila City. Lastly, to propose additional spaces that would cater to Manila City’s burial practices in a cemetery. This study aimed to provide cemetery development in the city and have the capacity to offer burial spaces and methodology options to the people. With the help of this study, Manila City would be able to serve high-quality funeral products and services, as well as the capability to provide the people’s burial preferences at a lower cost. It would also utilize a new form of building typology to sustainably manage the land for the dead. The design solution of the project would serve as a reference for future developments of cemetery projects.

The Necro Tower offers a sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced approach to Manila’s burial space crisis. It maximizes land use, supports varied religious practices, and sets a precedent for future high-density cemetery projects.
