PALANYAG: The Philippine International Cruise Terminal Complex is a comprehensive architectural thesis that proposes the development of the Philippines’ first dedicated cruise terminal, strategically located along Macapagal Boulevard in Parañaque City. This proposal responds to the country’s lack of purpose-built cruise infrastructure, despite its archipelagic geography and tourism potential. The project envisions a world-class cruise terminal complex that not only supports international cruise operations but also promotes Filipino identity and boosts economic development through integrated tourism and commercial activities.

Recognizing the economic damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly to the tourism sector, the thesis highlights cruise tourism as a viable recovery driver. With global cruise travel rebounding and Southeast Asia becoming a competitive cruise destination, the Philippines remains at a disadvantage due to its reliance on cargo ports for passenger disembarkation.

The thesis identifies this infrastructural gap as a key barrier to growth and proposes PALANYAG as a transformative solution. The complex will serve as an international gateway and a lifestyle destination, combining a cruise terminal, a shopping mall, and a hotel-casino in one integrated facility.

The site, located within Manila’s Entertainment City, Paranaque City, was selected for its accessibility, appropriate maritime depth, and proximity to major commercial developments. It spans 60,000 square meters along Manila Bay and is supported by favorable topography and existing infrastructure.

Surveys and stakeholder interviews confirmed strong support for the project, with respondents emphasizing the need for commercial amenities such as hotels, restaurants, casinos, and recreational areas to enhance the tourism experience and increase visitor dwell time.

The design concept follows the principles of Contemporary Philippine Architecture—modern in form but enriched with Filipino cultural elements. This approach not only establishes a distinctive national identity but also aligns with international standards for luxury travel. The cruise terminal will include embarkation and disembarkation halls, customs and immigration areas, lounges, and a cultural exhibit space, while the commercial portions of the development will cater to both local and international guests, supporting retail, leisure, and entertainment needs.

Economically, the project is positioned to generate employment, increase tourism receipts, and boost foreign exchange through enhanced cruise passenger volumes. Culturally, it presents an opportunity to showcase Filipino heritage and hospitality in a world-class setting. Integration with the nearby resorts and commercial centers also ensures synergy that will benefit both the cruise terminal and surrounding businesses. Key strategies for maximizing return on investment include high-end commercial integration, cultural branding, and strategic site development to accommodate future expansion.

In conclusion, PALANYAG is not merely a port development—it is a strategic infrastructure and tourism project that aligns architecture with national development goals. It addresses a critical gap in the Philippines' tourism and transportation sectors while reinforcing national identity through design. By combining form, function, and culture, the project presents a bold vision for the future of maritime tourism in the Philippines, setting a precedent for future port and tourism-related infrastructure.
