“An efficient urban design is a symbiotic world of people, plants and animals,” Winny Maas discusses in his winning proposal for Floriade 2022 for Almere. Bayouthiful City dreams of a place where it draws people closer to nature. A place that will satisfy the healthful needs.
“An efficient urban design is a symbiotic world of people, plants and animals,” Winny Maas discusses in his winning proposal for Floriade 2022 for Almere. Bayouthiful City dreams of a place where it draws people closer to nature. A place that will satisfy the healthful needs.
The designer believes that the real problem is the people. There is a need to change the people’s ways, the ignorance- a need to change the designs of our cities.
In Tubigon, Bohol, the handling of waste products caused by the municipality’s development has been becoming a huge concern. This may result to a universal problem of soil and water pollution which may endanger the marine biodiversity of the Tubigon Sea and Bateria River. Furthermore, 80% of Tubigon’s land is used for agriculture. Farming is the single most powerful driver of deforestation and loss of biodiversity because trees are cut down to give way for farming. Demand for food is ever increasing, the world is calling for smarter solution to grow food.
Tubigon’s non-preventive design discussed above to afford survival and symbiotic place for plants, animals and people may worsen in the future if not addressed. This led the researcher to investigate into one of the most neglected issues in the Philippines as it stresses on the country’s condition of urban deterioration; striving to address on designs that restricts economic growth, safety and cultural sensitivity.
In this study, the researcher aims to address various environmental conditions and proposes a new design within the framework of BIO-PHILMICOM envisions Tubigon, Bohol to become a hub for commerce, tourism and culture.
DESIGN CONCEPT
BAYOUTHIFUL City- is a bilingual term, coined by combining the three words: ‘Bayot’, a Boholano word that directly translates to ‘gay’ meaning joy and happiness; ‘Youth’, as the project aims to create a healthful ecology for children; and ‘Beautiful’ because it envisions to build a beautiful place for the animate species as well as, implicitly, the inanimate. Thus, “A place for happy beautiful children.”
The project visions to bring about new ideas in architecture. Sometimes redefining the normal perception of building typology in a way that it suits the project, location, as well as the concept will result to a worthy concept.
This project is hopeful to build an environment that has a symbiotic experience between people, plants and animals. To achieve this, the project combines the concept of Biophilia (innate desire to be with nature), Biomimicry (innovations inspired from nature) and Compact City (most sustainable type of urban design) to address issues of social and environmental degradation, a NEW strategy of the designer called BIO-PHILMICOM. Bayouthiful City specifically seeks refuge to the natural environment, discovering the natural processes of nature to reduce stress, improve cognitive function and creativity, improve our well-being and expedite healing through the concept of Biophilia.
The general concept combines a variety of innovative technologies and buildings. By letting nature affect the design, it created buildings that does not deplete the environment but actually restores it. A huge effort to mutualize the environment, culture, people, society, tourism to create a symbiotic environment for all.
URBAN DESIGN
The site shows a promising amount of green and blue spaces and is cut by an existing cultural pattern, perfect to show opposing site conditions. The urban design approach is not to destroy the exiting pattern instead introduce an approach to bring people to nature.
Compact city, being the most sustainable type of urban design, the mixed use development envisions to achieve the principles of biophilia. This is a suggestive approach on the ideal land use of Tubigon. The ground floor and the 2nd floor is allocated for commercial and office spaces in which it has pop up benches and dining spaces in front of the building adjacent to the side walk promoting the local economy. While on the upper floors are the residential spaces available for rent for people working on the offices and commercial spaces below.
ROAD AND STREET NETWORK SCHEME: Giving streets back to the people. Balancing mode of mobility between pedestrians and motorists. The concept is for every block along the primary highway, plazas of various nature themes. This concept is envisioned to control air quality and temperatures that may result from the heat island effect of asphalt and concrete and encourage people to stop by and appreciate the beauty of nature.
ARCHITECTURE
Bayouthiful City proposes urban plug in type of urban design and introduces 3 various buildings that will address the major environmental and social issues of Tubigon, Bohol.
The Infinity. . The symbol infinity is the building’s main inspiration which ideally represents the unity of two conflicting nature of assembly spaces and waste-recycling facility making it interesting. The design is intended to stimulate both environmental and social awareness to the community about the importance of recycling and segregating waste. The social tension created by the waste management problem is expected to be turned into a mutualism relationship with the community, a social- synergy.
The Vertical Garden. The four layers of forest is the building’s main inspiration. It gets its form from an inverted chocolate hill that looks like a silhouette of extending branches of trees. The design envision a market that works on its own. With aquaponics that combines fish culture and agriculture, this building best represent agriculture and fishing as the primary industries of Tubigon.
The Clam Floating Restaurant. The designer thought of incorporating this filtration system of clams to a floating restaurant by mimicking its natural process. The concept is developed in response to the environmental degradation of Tubigon Sea and Bateria River by filtering the pollutants present in the water while aiming to empower the local tourism. In addition, the project is also pictured to provide its own renewable energy and clean water while producing its own organic food through the process of aquaponics.
