As a result, many families, particularly those from low- and middle-income communities, struggle to obtain timely and comprehensive treatment, significantly affecting the survival rate and quality of life of children diagnosed with cancer.

Recognizing childhood cancer as a growing public health concern, this thesis proposes the development of a National Childhood Cancer Institute (NCCI), a government-supported national specialty center designed to provide comprehensive, accessible, and child-centered cancer care. The project envisions a healthcare institution that integrates advanced medical technology, multidisciplinary treatment services, family support programs, and therapeutic environments within a single facility. More than serving as a hospital, the proposed institute functions as a national center for treatment, research, education, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support, ensuring that children and their families receive holistic care throughout every stage of treatment and recovery.

The proposed project is strategically located in Barangay Dalig, Antipolo City, occupying a 32,000-square-meter (3.2-hectare) site with direct access to a 15.00-meter-wide major provincial road. The selected site offers a balance between accessibility and a naturally therapeutic environment. Antipolo City's elevated terrain, cleaner air, abundant greenery, and relatively peaceful surroundings contribute to creating a healing atmosphere that supports the physical and emotional well-being of pediatric patients. At the same time, the site's connection to major transportation networks ensures convenient access for patients, healthcare professionals, emergency services, and support personnel from nearby cities and provinces.

The architectural planning and development of the National Childhood Cancer Institute are guided by the principles of Evidence-Based Design (EBD). This approach utilizes credible research and healthcare data to influence architectural decisions that improve patient outcomes, staff efficiency, operational performance, and overall healthcare quality. Every design element within the facility is carefully planned to support the healing process by reducing environmental stressors, improving patient comfort, enhancing infection control, maximizing natural lighting and ventilation, and promoting efficient circulation for both patients and healthcare workers. Through Evidence-Based Design, the project demonstrates that architecture can directly contribute to better healthcare experiences and improved clinical outcomes.

A primary objective of the proposed institute is the creation of a child-friendly healing environment that recognizes the unique physical, emotional, psychological, and developmental needs of pediatric cancer patients. Unlike conventional hospitals that often create fear and anxiety among young patients, the NCCI seeks to establish spaces that encourage comfort, security, and hope. The design incorporates welcoming interiors, age-appropriate recreational spaces, therapeutic gardens, interactive learning areas, colorful yet calming visual environments, family-centered accommodations, and nature-integrated landscapes that collectively reduce stress and improve the overall patient experience. By transforming the healthcare environment into a more supportive and engaging setting, the institute encourages positive emotional responses that complement medical treatment.

The proposed National Childhood Cancer Institute is designed to provide a complete continuum of pediatric oncology services. These include outpatient consultation clinics, diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, chemotherapy and radiotherapy units, operating rooms, pediatric intensive care units, inpatient wards, bone marrow transplant facilities, rehabilitation centers, palliative care services, family counseling spaces, educational support facilities, research laboratories, administrative offices, training centers for healthcare professionals, and community outreach programs. Integrating these services into a single specialized institution minimizes patient referrals between different hospitals and improves treatment coordination, efficiency, and continuity of care.

Beyond its healthcare functions, the project emphasizes family-centered care by recognizing the essential role of parents and guardians throughout a child's cancer journey. The project incorporates passive design strategies such as proper building orientation, optimized daylighting, natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, landscape integration, and energy-efficient building systems to reduce operational costs and environmental impact. Green spaces and therapeutic gardens not only improve environmental performance but also contribute significantly to patient recovery by providing restorative outdoor environments that encourage relaxation and stress reduction. These sustainable design principles ensure that the institute remains environmentally responsible while maintaining long-term operational efficiency.

From an architectural planning perspective, the project carefully organizes the site through functional zoning that separates public, clinical, diagnostic, treatment, administrative, service, and support areas. This zoning strategy improves operational efficiency, enhances infection control measures, and ensures smooth circulation for patients, visitors, healthcare professionals, and emergency services. The site development also prioritizes future expansion opportunities to accommodate advances in medical technology, increasing patient demand, and additional specialized healthcare services in the years ahead.

The significance of this thesis extends beyond architectural design by addressing broader national healthcare challenges. Childhood cancer remains one of the leading causes of disease-related deaths among children worldwide, yet survival rates in developing countries remain significantly lower due to limited healthcare infrastructure and specialized medical services. Through the establishment of a National Childhood Cancer Institute, the project supports national efforts to improve pediatric healthcare delivery, strengthen healthcare equity, expand medical research capabilities, and increase access to quality treatment regardless of socioeconomic status.
