The Municipality of Silang, Cavite, is recognized as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the province and serves as a major contributor to the agricultural sector. Strategically located at the center of major urban areas in Cavite and functioning as a gateway to the neighboring provinces of Laguna and Batangas, Silang possesses significant potential for economic expansion, urban development, and agribusiness growth. Despite these advantages, the municipality continues to face challenges in maintaining competitiveness with other rapidly developing areas within the CALABARZON region. Although agriculture, tourism, and emerging industrial activities are present, existing public market facilities and agricultural trading venues are no longer sufficient to support the increasing demands of local farmers, vendors, consumers, and investors.
Despite these opportunities, Silang lacks a modern, integrated facility that can efficiently support both commercial activities and agricultural distribution. Existing public markets in the municipality are characterized by issues such as poor accessibility, inadequate sanitation facilities, inefficient waste management systems, narrow circulation spaces, and aging infrastructure. These conditions negatively affect both vendors and consumers, resulting in underutilized market spaces and limiting the municipality’s full economic potential.
In response to these challenges, the proposed project entitled “Bagong Silang: A Public Market Complex towards Reintegrative Development of Agri-hub in Silang, Cavite” aims to address the growing economic and agricultural demands of the municipality through the development of a modern, integrated facility. The project proposes a Public Market Complex combined with an Agriculture Hub that will serve as a central venue for trade, commerce, and agricultural activities. This integrated approach seeks to strengthen local market systems, improve operational efficiency, and enhance access to agricultural goods and services.
The Agriculture Hub component will provide local farmers with direct access to consumers, reducing reliance on intermediaries and allowing producers to receive fairer returns for their products. It will also support agricultural storage, processing, and distribution, thereby improving productivity, strengthening food security, and enhancing the municipality’s agricultural value chain. Through stronger linkages between producers and consumers, the facility is expected to improve farmers’ livelihoods while ensuring the availability of affordable and high-quality agricultural products for the community.
The study employed a descriptive-architectural research approach utilizing literature reviews, case studies, site analysis, interviews, government records, and established planning and design standards. Relevant data were gathered and analyzed to determine spatial requirements, functional relationships, and design criteria necessary for the development of the proposed facility. These served as the basis for formulating appropriate architectural solutions for the Public Market Complex and Agriculture Hub.
The proposal also seeks to redefine the traditional public market through a contemporary and sustainable architectural approach. The design prioritizes efficient circulation, accessibility, proper ventilation, sanitation, safety, and user comfort while integrating local culture and identity. Through these strategies, the project aims to transform the public market into a vibrant, functional, and aesthetically engaging community space that promotes economic activity, strengthens social interaction, and reinforces local identity. It also emphasizes resilience and adaptability in response to future urban growth and changing market demands, ensuring long-term usability and relevance of the facility.
This study supports the Municipality of Silang’s initiatives to modernize its public market facilities and expand its agribusiness sector. It addresses the need for infrastructure that can support both urban and rural economies while responding to the evolving demands of the municipality’s population and economic landscape. The absence of a modern market complex and dedicated agricultural trading facility limits opportunities for local farmers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. Thus, the proposed development seeks to bridge this gap by improving market accessibility, supporting local enterprises, and strengthening Silang’s role as a center for agricultural and economic activity.
To ensure clarity on the coverage of the study, the following scope and delimitations were established. The primary goal of the project is to provide an architectural design solution that will enhance the municipality’s economy while strengthening agricultural production and market efficiency. Specifically, the study focuses on the design of a Public Market Complex integrated with an Agriculture Hub that encourages community participation, supports both concessionaires and consumers, and promotes sustainable urban growth. The integrated Agriculture Hub is envisioned as a focal point for agricultural development not only in Silang but also in neighboring municipalities.
The significance of the study extends to various sectors. For the local government, it provides a framework for infrastructure development that can stimulate economic growth and support planning objectives. For the local community, it improves access to market facilities, employment opportunities, and public services. Farmers and vendors benefit from more efficient trading systems, expanded market opportunities, and improved working conditions. Furthermore, the study contributes to the field of architecture by highlighting the importance of public markets and agricultural hubs as essential urban facilities that support sustainable economic and social development. It also serves as a reference for future research related to public market planning, agri-hub systems, and community-centered developments.
In addition, the project aligns with broader goals of sustainable development by promoting efficient land use, reducing post-harvest losses through improved logistics, and encouraging localized food systems. The design also supports environmental considerations through better waste management planning, improved airflow systems, and the integration of passive design strategies that enhance overall environmental performance of the facility.
The scope of this study is limited to the architectural planning and design of the proposed Public Market Complex and Agriculture Hub in Silang, Cavite. It includes space programming, site development planning, floor plans, elevations, sections, and perspective drawings. The study is based on site analysis, existing market conditions, statistical data, literature reviews, and applicable design standards to establish spatial and functional requirements.
However, the study is limited to architectural design considerations only. It does not include detailed engineering disciplines such as structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, sanitary, and fire protection systems. It also excludes detailed cost estimates, financial feasibility studies, construction methodologies, and technical specifications. The project is therefore confined to the development of an architectural design proposal that responds to the identified needs of the municipality.
Overall, the proposed Bagong Silang Public Market Complex and Agriculture Hub envisions a sustainable, community-oriented, and economically viable development that integrates commerce, agriculture, and public interaction. Through the modernization of market facilities and strengthening of agricultural systems, the project aims to improve the quality of life of residents, empower local producers, promote inclusive economic growth, and contribute to the long-term resilience and development of the Municipality of Silang, Cavite. Ultimately, the project aspires to establish a model public market and agri-hub that can serve as a benchmark for future developments in other municipalities within the region.
