ABSTRACTThe thesis entitled "TAN-AW: Horticulture's Impact on the Development of Farming Systems and Sustainable Marketing Production in Solsona" will explore the various ways in which horticulture can play a significant role in the development of farming systems as well as sustainable marketing production. The study will focus on Tan-aw, a horticulture building that combines the elements of Philippine and modern architecture and aims to become a controller building of horticulture in the Municipality of Solsona.
The study will analyze the various environmental and economic benefits of horticulture and how Tan-aw can contribute to long-term food security, soil health, and environmental sustainability. It will also assess the potential impact of Tan-aw on the marketing production of horticultural products in the locality. The project is expected to contribute to the development of sustainable farming systems and marketing production that prioritize environmental protection and economic profitability.
Moreover, the thesis will explore the potential of Tan-aw to become a Horticulture Tourism destination in the Province of Ilocos Norte. The study will analyze the potential impact of horticulture tourism on the local economy, the environment, and local communities. It will also examine the methods of integrating cultural heritage and agricultural practices to offer a unique and authentic experience to tourists.
Overall, the study aims to highlight the significance of horticulture as a sustainable and profitable industry that supports the development of farming systems and marketing production, as well as promotes local culture and tourism. Tan-aw, as a horticulture building, will play a critical role in ensuring environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and community development in the Municipality of Solsona and the Province of Ilocos Norte.
The Municipality of Solsona is well-known as rich in horticultural products. Every January, this town celebrates the “Gameng Festival”, as a result, Solsona is rich in numerous riches, including its serene resources, rich culture, and traditional forms. However, horticulture is not noticed and developed.
In the center portion of an agricultural lot in Barangay Capurictan, Solsona, Ilocos Norte will propose Tan-aw – a horticulture building to uplift the thing unseen in that locality. A total lot area of 54,288.3032 m2 with 20.00 meters RROW in the South and agricultural land and neighborhood in the East. Tan-aw: Horticulture’s Impact on the Development of Farming Systems and Sustainable Marketing Production in Solsona objectives are: to boost crop yield and output of horticultural fruits, horticultural vegetables, and horticultural gardens; to build nurseries for high-quality planting materials in the public and private sectors; to transfer technologies from the laboratory to the real world; to ensure healthy soil; to upgrade market and marketing infrastructure; to make sure that programs are implemented on schedule through monitoring and evaluation; to enhance the department's internal effectiveness, responsiveness, and service delivery; to acknowledge and support the small farmers in Solsona; and to become the first horticulture tourism in Ilocos Norte.
This proposal is an opportunity for the farmers of Solsona to prioritize giving them a job and a partnership with the small farmers. The Horticulture Building facility will lead as the “controller of horticultural farming” in the municipality. Tan-aw will have a mix of uses and characters of occupancy, which could include residential, educational, recreational, commercial, and agricultural purposes. The building's design and layout will likely be versatile to accommodate the different activities and functions it will serve. Such a mix-use building can provide a unique and dynamic environment, fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation. It can also support and enhance the community around it, serving as a hub for various activities and services. A mix-use Horticulture Building can contribute to the sustainability, efficiency, and livability of the built environment.
FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS
The feasibility analysis of Tan-aw, the horticulture building, provides an interesting insight into the importance of horticultural production and its impact on local economies. The projected return on investment, 0.036 and 3.597 in percentage set at 27.78 or 28 years, may seem to be a long time to wait for a profitable investment, but it reflects the realistic projection of the annual income, expenses, and operations services required to generate a substantial net income.
The key factor to consider when analyzing the financial feasibility of Tan-aw is the supply and demand for horticultural products, which form the backbone of the project's profitability. Based on the projected annual income, it is apparent that the demand for fruits and vegetables in the Municipality of Solsona and the Province of Ilocos Norte is high. As such, Tan-aw will likely continue to generate significant income.
However, it is relevant to note that horticultural products are highly sensitive to external factors such as climate change and disease outbreaks, which can result in decreased supply and increased prices. The implication of this is that if the supply of horticultural products decreases in the locality or demand decreases (excluding Tan-aw looking for the considerations and solutions of horticulture farming), the price of the products will increase. This, in turn, will result in higher revenue generation for Tan-aw in the long term and make it possible that the return on investment to become early as 28 years.
Another interesting point to note is the impact of horticulture on marketing production that is sustainable. Horticulture is widely recognized for its sustainable, environmentally friendly practices that support biodiversity and promote soil fertility, contributing to long-term food security. As such, the successful implementation of Tan-aw will have a significant impact on the perception of horticultural production, encouraging other investors to invest in similar projects and promote horticulture's sustainable practices.
Moreover, the profitability of Tan-aw reinforces the need for sustainable and profitable agricultural practices that emphasize food security, soil health, and environmentally friendly practices. The project represents a vital example of how agriculture, and horticulture in particular, can be a profitable and sustainable industry, benefiting both the environment and the economy.
In conclusion, the financial feasibility of Tan-aw, the horticulture building, emphasizes the importance and profitability of horticultural production in the Municipality of Solsona and the Province of Ilocos Norte. Although the projected return on investment may seem to be a long time, sustainable and environmentally friendly practices encourage investments in similar projects, contributing to long-term food security, soil health, and environmental protection. Thus, a horticulture building like Tan-aw is a profitable and sustainable investment in the long term.
SUMMARY
Living in the Municipality of Solsona for over two decades - a researcher has come to realize that horticulture is one of their greatest riches. Despite annually celebrating the Gameng Festival, which highlights the municipality's horticultural value, the importance of this aspect of agriculture is not fully adopted.
Given the opportunity to "uplift the things unseen" by AR Barts, a profound design philosophy, it is clear that horticulture has a great number of benefits for communities. It can be employed to create sustainable and renewable agriculture practices that alleviate poverty, encourage social and economic development, and positively impact the environment. This is even more important when considering urban settings where access to green spaces and community gardens is limited.
As a future architect, the importance of community involvement and engagement cannot be overstated. When designing for communities, we need to ensure their needs are taken into consideration in every project. This includes the cultivation of gardens and horticulture, which provides a range of benefits from providing fresh produce to improving mental health and community connections.
Come to understand that “the researcher is not designing for himself but for the community.” Designing for Solsona and its people, with a keen focus on horticulture, is essential to creating sustainable, resilient, and prosperous communities.
