Philippine Neurology Hospital: Adapting Pattern Architecture through Hospital Design

In the previous year, an increased in thousands of people diagnosed with neurological disease have been recorded in the Philippines. Apparently, according to professionals, once diagnosed with any kind of neurological diseases is already considered a Persons with Disability (PWD). The lack of government facility which cater this kind of disability became a crisis for those who have neurological related diseases.

In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) with the Department of Health (DOH) called the public to alert within the increase of cases of neurological diseases, pertaining to stroke, brain aneurysm, brain cancer and many more. Saint Luke’s Medical Center is the most intensive healthcare facility available here in the Philippines that governs this type of diseases but they are only specialize in epilepsy and pediatric neurology. On the other hand, most of the other hospitals accepts broad image of general neurology.

The feasibility study has shown Philippine Neurology Hospital (PNH) as a viable option for the long-term care of people with a disability, and was diagnosed in such disease, who needs formal support and guidance to live.

THE PROPOSAL: PHILIPPINE NEUROLOGY HOSPITAL

A specialized hospital that focuses on Neurology diseases located at Quezon City was used as a concept on governing the increase of neurological diseases here in the Philippines. It is a level 3 hospital that is consists of 300 beds that caters general services, pediatric services, Nuffield services (neurological wards), and rehabilitation services.

The vision for PNH is for a well-designed facility to accommodate and serve specific kind of users, neurological patients, to be guided and supported on everything what they need to be treated not only in terms of medicinal field but also in architecture by means of flexible design for common areas, green associated design and designed with the provision of the Accessibility Law (BP 344).

The proposal focused on 2 key concepts:

1. Advantages of Specific/Specialized Hospital

1.1 PNH is a hospital that specialized in neurology that results into reducing medical complications compared to general hospitals that is present at the Philippines.

1.2 PNH will also lower the long-term costs of people due to its specialty, but, has a better preparation and support for a more successful result.

1.3 PNH has access to services that is not found in more rehabilitation centers, neurology clinics, and general hospital that caters neurology.

2. Pattern as a concept

2.1 Visual Pattern – A very well-known artist that was diagnosed with a neurological disease was treated by means of her art, and this art was transposed into an architectural detail of the proposed PNH. According to a psychologist, there is a treatment called pattern psychology that was used for patient with mental and traumatic experience. This type of concept was studied for the sake of neurology patients and was incorporated to the hospital.

2.2 Pattern Transposition – Aside from the visual pattern present, incorporation of behavior, therapy, diseases and side effects transposition into an architectural detail was integrated. This is by means of researching and experiencing by hand the said aspects. Analysis of the patients and its transposition are as follows:

2.3 Strategic Concept and Vision – Hospitals, general and specialized, were researched for different visualization. PNH was intended to have a flexible design by means of:
  • Heterogeneity, easy connection of users with less barriers,
  • Creativity, users being productive due to hospital as being toxic,
  • Identity, hospitals as being a hotel or a mall in identity,
  • Sensitivity, arrangement of spaces due to its level of sensitivity. High stimulated areas bounded by buffer spaces, and also low-stimulated areas.
  • Color Cleanliness, Clear lighting through color scheme,
  • Multiplicity, Spaces connected within each other for better guidance and supervision.
  • Accessibility, connection of urgent users to another user.
2.4 Planning and Design – Requirements of Quezon City were determined as well as other building laws in order to develop the said hospital. Spaces were obtained through adapting the needed facilities and spaces of the diseases, filtered by resident doctors of the Philippine Neurology Association at Saint Luke’s Medical Center and TriCity, that is known here in the Philippines.

2.5 Designing Green – The PNH was incorporated with green pockets that not only serves as buffers for noise as required in designing a hospital but also by means of therapeutic treatment as healing gardens associated and design as per with different kind of diseases transposed architecturally. Also, the patterns used was based by means of solar analysis of the wall incorporated by the pattern. Smaller and much dense pattern means that the area of the surface is hotter compared to the larger and less dense surface. The Analysis was done by an engineer of LEED Consultant and Construction Company.

CONCLUSION

The most common fact of patients diagnosed with neurological diseases are their survival rate, study shows that most of these cases has 50-60% survival rate. Once treated there are 80-90% of being disabled and needed of different kinds of therapy like physical, occupational and many more.

The study has demonstrated that the Philippine Neurology Hospital provides a better services for neurology. Upon with this research, pattern architecture articulates a solution on how a building will interact with its occupants. Pattern Architecture will adopt on how the occupants behave and transposes it into an architectural attribute that will serve as a therapeutic treatment aside from the normal daily runs of therapy and medication. It addresses a pattern that develops an environment integrated with therapy, behavior and a self-disease aspect of the users. It is an architectural design that encompasses the acoustics, visual character, spatial quality, texture, color, shape and form of the facility to develop the needs of the users to be treated.

In the integration of pattern architecture to the proposed Philippine Neurology Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, this will eventually provide a health care facility that caters Neurological services that other hospitals does not provide, thus making the project a partial fulfillment to the Proclamation 92 of National Council on Disability Affairs, that aims on providing a healthcare facility due to the rapid increase of neurological disease here in the Philippines.
